This article is written in response to incoming questions I have had from parents after both the release of my podcast, “Tooth Decay in Autism, Causative Factors and Natural Solutions” and the report: Boy with autism dies after routine dental procedure.

Detoxifying before any possible known toxic exposure, or after, is crucial. We are exposed every day to various toxins, but sometimes they are induced toxins such as vaccinations, anesthesia, or known exposure to toxic chemicals.

When toxins enter the body, whether through ingestion, inhalation, or injection they become a burden to the liver. The liver is our organ of detoxification. Children on the autism spectrum often have an already congested liver, so an additional burden may prove to be too much and they can become very ill, or it can even be fatal.

What you can do

If you know that you will be exposed to toxins, it is important to take plenty of supplements that are known to assist detoxification. Drink a lot of water prior to, and immediately following the exposure, and eat the right foods. Avoid any inflammatory foods such as wheat, dairy, sugar, corn and soy. Night shade foods such as tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant contain enzyme inhibiting compounds called solanaceous glycoalkaloids (SGAs), that prevent the breakdown of anesthetic drugs. These are important to avoid for several days prior to and after anesthetic exposure of any kind, including local, or general.

This support should continue for at least two weeks afterward, as well (although it is good practice to continue ongoing). Be sure that the immune system is strong going in. There should not be any sign of allergies or even a runny nose. This means the immune system is already working harder than usual to fight off invasion and it will be less able to fight more.

Craniosacral therapy is important after any dental treatment for two main reasons:

  1. The cranial base can get stuck during dental work causing many issues with anxiety, digestion, and respiration.

2. craniosacral therapy is excellent for assisting detoxification because it helps to flush the cerebral spinal fluid, therefore, assisting with the flushing of toxins.

Homeopathy and acupuncture have also been known to be helpful with pre and post toxic exposure.

Natural detoxifying supplements

Vitamin C: Vitamin C can be taken in dosages to bowel tolerance. Too much vitamin C will not hurt you, but it can loosen the stool. This varies per individual.

Liver support: Support the liver with a natural detoxification source.  A product I have found very helpful with liver support is Liver Detoxification Pathways Elixir. Liver Detox Elixir from the company Get Healthy Again is a frequency enhanced elixir that supports both phase I and phase II detoxification. This is very important to be sure all toxins are getting expelled from the body and not just brought to a congested liver to process and get stuck in.

Probiotics are important to boost the immune system.

Glutathione, the master antioxidant.

B vitamins, especially Methyl B12, to assist the methylation process.

Zinc: Zinc should not be used in excess as it can increase the amount of toxicity from heavy metals. Usually ten to fifteen milligrams per day is plenty, depending on age and weight.

The amino acid, Taurine, given intravenously before, and during anesthesia has been shown in studies to increase levels of glutathione  and blood plasma Malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid peroxidation. Taurine displays an ability to create cellular protection. I have listed a resource for taurine in powder form on the product page referred to above.

Many children change or regress after exposure to anesthesia.
